The purpose of my study is to find out how teachers work to develop children's oral communication skills in lower grades in school. The study is based on qualitative interviews with four teachers. The research questions are:
• How do teachers look at their work when it comes to give each child an opportunity to develop its spoken language?
• How do the teachers act in relation to stimulation of spoken language in school? The results of the study show that the teachers are working in several different ways to stimulate the linguistic communication. The teachers do not use a single method. They like to pick the best of several methods or create their own materials. Rhymes, chants, sensory integration, reading aloud, word pronunciation and conversation in different configurations are different ways in which teachers’ work, in order to develop the oral language. For children to develop their language, the study shows that the retelling of stories and experiences occur. Teachers consider it important to help pupils to find new words and synonyms of words. When adults use new words, pupils will have the opportunity to take advantage of them and actively use the words when it suits the pupils best. Teachers talk about the importance of working with the linguistic awareness, as they believe that the next step will be reading. The results of the study show that teachers talk about the work with oral language development in relation to general language learning.
