Abstract [en]

This study represents immigrant students in Swedish school. Different studies show that dynamics of, among others, gender, parents, segregation and amount of time living in the new country, have great influence on students’ comfort and achievement in school. The main purpose of the research is to put light on immigrant students’ comfort in school and also to look into if they feel that their immigrant background is a hindrance for their success in school. Those who took part in the quantitative study were 62 ninth grade students with the immigrant background. These students were from three different schools, where one school was in the center of the city, while the two other schools were in the suburban areas of the city. One of the schools in the suburban part of the city was a segregated school where the most of the students are students with immigrant background. Gender, time of residence in the country, parents’ housing and profession and students’ choice of course in high-school were the variables that were included in the analysis. The study showed that the students from the segregated school felt the most comfort in school. Analysis also showed that girls showed the highest degree of comfort in school. Students’ haven’t experienced that their immigrant background could be a hindrance in school.

Title: Immigrant students – students’ wellbeing in school
