Sometimes we hear that Australia is one of the countries in the front-line when utilizing information technology to support business needs in oraganizations, but we have limited knowledge about the Australian way.This was my background to make a journey to Sydney and Brisbane to find out what we may learn from Australia. The main purpose of my visit was to investigate research and education in the subject Information Systems at ten universities and a couple of research institutes. I also visited som companies, consultants, software package vendors and the Australian Computer Society to find out their opinions about the academic world.My overall impression is that Sweden is somewhat stronger than Australia in the Information Systems field. Information Systems is a rather new disicpline in Australia. The universities try to build up this subject as part of departments for Business and Commeerce. A problem is that most universities have not, on their own hand, a critical mass of researchers in Information Systems. Furthermore universities have a tendency to compete rather than to cooperate in their activities. Swedish academics have together found a more of an identity or kernel for research and education in Information Processing and Information Management
