The forms and functions of archives have changed, while questions of authenticity, provenance, accessibility, and transparency have become increasingly complex as society has evolved, digitalization has advanced, and the use of AI has expanded.

Vad är arkivvetenskap? [What Is Archival Science?] offers an introduction to, and contributes to, the ongoing discussion about the role of archives in society. The anthology provides an account of an academic discipline in constant transformation, with particular emphasis on the development and contemporary character of archival science as a scholarly discipline in Sweden. It explores how the Swedish field has evolved in relation to both international developments and the specific institutional, educational, and societal contexts in which the discipline has taken shape. Archival science moves between theory and practice, history and the future, public administration and digital platforms, while questions of power, memory, democracy, and knowledge have become increasingly important.

The chapters examine how archives in Sweden are created, organized, and used at a time when the boundaries between information, technology, and society are becoming increasingly fluid. Topics include the history of archives, the establishment and development of archival science education in Sweden, and the interdisciplinary character of the field, as well as digitalization, participation, ethics, AI, and new forms of cultural heritage.
