Factors associated with rehabilitation outcomes in injured wild birds (English)
Abstract [en]

Human activities and urbanization contribute each year to many wild animals in need of rehabilitation due to injuries. Birds make up for a big part of these cases, however knowledge around these factors which affect release back to their native habitat is still limited. The aim of this study was to investigate how types of injury, age, species, season and duration of care relate to the possibility that a bird can be released back after rehabilitation, by analyzing medical records of 2721 individuals. The results were dominated by negative outcomes, euthanasia and natural death (72,4 %), while 27,6 % of the individuals were successfully rereleased. The highest chance of being rereleased had adults and predatory birds, while fractures were the type of injury that had the lowest odds of being re-released. There was a significant difference in time of care, with birds that died did so within the first 24 hours, while those who were rereleased were cared for for a longer period. Thus, duration of care can be used as an indicator of the severity of the injury. By knowing which groups have the worse prognosis, wildlife rehabilitation centers can better prioritize their resources, make quicker decisions, and thereby improve animal welfare.
