A qualitative study about social workers experiences of motivational work with adults living with harmful use and addiction (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore social workers experiences of motivational work with adults living with harmful substance use or addiction. The research questions were "What strategies/methods are used by social workers to strengthen client's motivation to change" and "What factors makes the motivational work harder and easier?". The study was theoretically grounded in self-determination theory, empowerment theory and motivational relationship theory. The results showed that motivational interviewing (MI) was the primary working method and that several MI tools were used, such as scaling questions, the ambivalence cross, and ASI interviews. The findings also demonstrated that social workers predominantly worked with a solution-focused approach. Furthermore, the results indicated that both individual and organizational factors could facilitate as well as hinder the work. All social workers stated that preconceived notions and a lack of knowledge about social services complicated their work. Other challenges described included the short motivational window present in some clients and comorbidity. Factors that facilitated the work were described as support from colleagues, both internally and externally, a strong alliance with the client and situations where the client had a solid support network. This study's conclusion was that motivational work is complex on multiple levels, with a strong focus on building alliance and to create good relationships with other professionals, relatives and authorities.
