Sustainability reporting in the forest industry : A study of how sustainability is reported by companies in the forest industry (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Sustainability plays a central role for companies in the forest industry. This is because the industry has a major impact on all dimensions of sustainability; economic, social and ecological. The impact becomes more relevant as it can have both positive and negative effects. This paper deals with sustainability reporting in the forest industry. The purpose is to investigate how companies in the forest industry present their sustainability reporting, with focus on design and content. In this study, two companies in the forest industry have been selected; Billerud and Holmen. The method is based on a qualitative content analysis of sustainability reports from these two companies. The theoretical framework used in the study is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). CSR can be understood using different models and theories that highlight corporate responsibility. In this analysis, Stakeholder Theory, the Triple Bottom Line and Carroll's Pyramid have been selected to contribute to a deeper understanding. The results of the study show that Billerud and Holmen work in a structured and systematic way with sustainability reporting and integrate sustainability aspects into their operations. The reports show that the drivers for sustainability work vary and can be based on economic, social or ecological factors. There are clear signs that progress is being made on sustainability, but areas for improvement have also been identified, mainly linked to social and environmental issues.
