Climate adaptation in Swedish forestry : An analysis of strategies, decisions and barriers (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Climate change increases the risks of extreme weather events that significantly impact forests andtheir ecosystems. This study examines how climate change adaptation is addressed in Swedishforestry, with a focus on proposed measures, decision-making processes, and barriers. Using aqualitative content analysis of four documents from various forestry stakeholders, the studyidentifies underlying patterns, values, and norms through both manifest content and with latentinterpretations. Recurring measures include promoting mixed forests with hardwood species, reducing clearcutting, and protecting ecosystems and habitats. However, the analysis shows thateconomic incentives often take precedence over ecological considerations, suggesting thatprofitability remains a key driver of adaptation. Despite widespread awareness of climate risks andstrong scientific evidence, practical adaptation efforts are often limited. Historical ecology and pathdependency helped explain how past norms, traditions and economic priorities continue to influenceforest management today, creating resistance to change. The findings highlight the need for clearer,forward-looking strategies that prioritize ecosystem resilience while balancing production goals.Moving forward, there is a need for more clearly defined strategies that prioritize ecosystemrequirements, while also balancing the necessity for a certain degree of production.
