Place for Public Health : A study of sports participation among children, adolescents and young adults, and the correlation with geographical variations in public health (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Sweden's population generally has a high standard of living and the country has strong local sports cultures with an active network of sports clubs, but there are differences both in public health and in sports participation between municipalities. The government is constantly working to promote equal health, and one approach is to let sports clubs apply for support for their activities from the state treasury. In the long term, the state benefits through lower burdensome disease rates and increased productivity, while the individual and the local community benefit from increased well-being and stronger social cohesion through the sports movement.

The aim of the study is to investigate the geographical variation in public health among young people, related to local sporting practices. This means that factors that can explain the variations are given interest with a focus on children, adolescents and young adults. In order to analyze the correlation between sports participation and well-being, social structural factors such as socioeconomic status are examined together with health indicators. The results are then discussed based on the importance of the location, using theories from human geography and theories on the promotion of good health.

The results show that there are variations between municipalities, with a connection between high sports participation among individuals up to the age of 25 and better health in children, young people and adults. Factors such as a good economy, higher education and low unemployment rates have moderate to strong correlations with increased sports participation and better public health. This is seen in commuter municipalities in urban environments, close to large cities. The results indicate that the southern half of Sweden (Svealand and Götaland) has better public health as a result of better structural conditions and higher sports participation.

The conclusion is that geographical variation in the public health of young people and adults can be explained, among other things, by socioeconomic status. It is advantageous to live in urban municipalities where the organized sports movement is strong. The study indicates that children's norms and values, shaped by parents among other influences, affect their health. Simultaneously, the uneven distribution between places seems to be a result of long-term complex mechanisms within economics, the creation of accessibility and local culture.
