Restaurerande effekter utav enstaka rotvältor i ripariska zoner: Betoning på störningsintensitet (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Ecological theory suggests that higher biodiversity comes from higher habitat heterogeneity. Habitat heterogeneity is in turn generated by disturbances. When empirically testing these theories, the results are ambiguous. Understanding these relationships has implications for both theoretical ecology and practical conservation and management. Both habitat creation and disturbance reinstation are methods of ecological restoration. Further, disturbance emulating forestry is a scientific frontier. Management of the boreal landscape has, however, typically involved a disruption of disturbances, a decrease in habitat heterogeneity, and a loss of biodiversity. The Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis predicts the highest effect on biodiversity, when disturbances are intermediate in intensity and frequency. This stems from the idea that disturbances are both destructive and constructive, wherein habitat is created as species are vacated. This theory also recognizes a trade-off between competitive ability and disturbance tolerance. Typical riparian species are adapted to typical riparian contexts. In Fennoscandian boreal forests, Picea abies is one example of a tree species with a large competitive ability. Broadleaf trees such as those belonging to Betulaceae and Salicaceae have, in contrast, a high disturbance tolerance. Both forest and freshwater are abundant in Fennoscandia. As the surrounding forest is clearcut, high intensity wind-felling of the riparian buffer is common. Previous research has shown how these disturbances fail to improve conditions for biodiversity. My study explores the other end of the spectra, as low intensity disturbances create single root wads on the channel edges of headwater streams. At fifteen streams in southern Sweden, I visited a total of thirty-eight root wads and as many upstream controls. I measured stream geomorphology and riparian tree species composition, then tested for differences. I explore whether root wads increase site-scale heterogeneity by the creation of a unique local stretch of the stream, or a locally unique patch in the riparian zone. In the second part of my study, I calculate stream geomorphology and riparian tree species composition per site. By gathering fish data from electrofishing surveys, I use correlation to look at relationships. The results of the second part of my study are ambiguous, mainly due to a small sample size. For the first part of my study, a more appropriate sample size was obtained, and I found several differences between root wads and controls. Root wads are associated with wider streams, a flatter bottom, and more complex edges. The relative abundance of both sand and gravel increases, while silt does not. In the riparian zone, there was a higher proportion of broadleaf trees. These results inform our understanding of disturbances and have implications for management. Low intensity disturbances, through the root wads they cause, increase heterogeneity – both in the stream and in the riparian zone. Management should strive to maintain appropriate disturbance intensities. Wider riparian buffers decrease wind disturbance intensity and/or frequency, which decrease either the probability or the rate of root wad formation. The societal ambitions to move towards multi-layered, mixed-species riparian forests would benefit from a focus on disturbances.
