Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

As the demands for sustainability reporting increase, the auditor's professional role is changing and includes the review of non-financial information. Previous research has examined motivation in the form of ethical beliefs, professional interests but not about motivation linked to established motivation theories. There is therefore a knowledge gap about what motivates sustainability auditors. This study aims to create a deeper understanding of what auditors’ experience motivates them to work exclusively with sustainability auditing.

To answer the purpose of the study, a qualitative method was implemented in which seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with auditors who needed to have worked exclusively with sustainability reporting, i.e. sustainability auditors. The study is based on Self-Determination Theory and Expectancy Theory to analyse the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of the sustainability auditor. To obtain the results, data from the interviews were coded and sorted into themes, which were: Intrinsic motivation and learning, extrinsic rewards and recognition, social relationships and belonging, stress and performance, and, values and purpose.

Finally, the results were analysed against the theoretical framework and based on that, the purpose of the study was answered. The results show that learning, autonomy, professional identity, recognition and meaningfulness are perceived to have an important role in the sustainability auditor's motivation to work with sustainability auditing. The study contributes with increased understanding of how sustainability auditors perceive their professional role in a changing audit environment and provides insights that may be relevant for audit firms and managers who want to increase the commitment of sustainability auditors.
