Mechanical Solution for Elevation of Sight (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis was carried out on behalf of and in collaboration with Saab Dynamics AB. The objective was to develop at least one fully mechanical solution that prevents unwanted adjustment of the elevation unit during firing, intended for a backup sight on Saabs recoilless rifle Carl-Gustaf. This could be achieved either by modifying the existing elevation mechanism or by presenting an entirely new concept. The elevation unit should be adjustable with one hand, incorporate a locking function to prevent readjustment upon firing, and enable an elevation range of 0 – 150 mrad. The project aimed to demonstrate that the proposed solution could meet these requirements theoretically. Ultimately, the work provides Saab with a basis for evaluating whether a completely new elevation unit should be developed, or if the existing one can be refined to the point where it no longer shifts under recoil.

The project was conducted as a structured product development process, following an established methodology for systematic mechanical design. The thesis outlines the work through the phases of pre-study, concept generation, concept selection, layout design, and detailed design. The causes of the undesired adjustment upon firing were analyzed, a specification of requirements was established, and 46 initial design ideas – comprising various sub-solutions – were generated. From these, 13 conceptual combinations were formed and systematically evaluated using decision matrices. Two concepts were selected for further development. Layouts were defined, calculations were carried out to ensure that the desired functionality was achieved, and key components were dimensioned accordingly. Both concepts were modeled in CAD. In the detailed design phase, manufacturability and ease of assembly were also considered in addition to the primary function. Two prototypes were manufactured in order to demonstrate the basic layout and functionality of each concept to the client.

The two concepts combine existing and largely proven mechanical solutions, which gives them strong potential to fulfill the stated requirements. Yet, further simulations and experimental testing are necessary to verify the functional performance of the concepts. Key aspects such as tolerance analysis, structural integrity, and material selection should be examined in more detail. Live-fire testing should be conducted under realistic and dynamic conditions, and ergonomic factors should be evaluated to assess usability.
