ACT:s contribution to increased psychological resilience : A systematic review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Objective: Through a systematic review gather research about the contribution of ACT-based interventions to increased psychological resilience in an adult population over 18 years and investigate the effect size. The review also investigates if it is possible that there is a relationship between psychological resilience and psychological flexibility. Method: A search was made in the databases PsycInfo and PubMed and resulted in 166 studies. After screening, 13 studies were included. The result of the study was summarized both qualitatively and quantitatively. Result: Nine of the 13 studies reported a significant effect of time regarding psychological resilience in the intervention groups. The weighted effect sizes for psychological resilience in the intervention group was 1,74 between pre-measurement and post-measurement and 2,07 between pre-measurement and follow-up. For the control groups it was 0,10 between pre-measurement and post-measurement and 0,28 between premeasurement and follow-up. Regarding the relationship between psychological resilience and psychological flexibility, both had a positive weighted effect size between pre-measurement and post-measurement and between pre-measurement and follow-up for the intervention groups. The effect size for both concepts also increased over time. Conclusion: The result indicates that ACT-based interventions can contribute to increased psychological resilience in adults over 18 years, and the effects can be large. The result also indicates that it is possible that there is a relationship between psychological resilience and psychological flexibility. More research is needed regarding the effects of ACT-based interventions on psychological resilience and the relationship between psychological flexibility and psychological resilience.
