"When did wanting to publish a book become a bad thing?" : An argumentation analysis of the debate on hybrid publishing in Sweden (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyse how hybrid publishing affects the book market, the role and status of authors, as well as the quality of literature in Sweden. The study consists of an argumentation analysis of debate articles from 2023 and 2024, written by authors and other actors involved in the literary field. The result shows that the debate mainly centers on whether hybrid publishers are exploiting authors for financial gain, indicating that authors positions are becoming at risk. It is also concluded that there is a general belief that traditional publishing results in litterature of higher quality. On the other hand, hybrid publishing allows more genres and types of books to be published, resulting in an increased diversity on the market. However, without thorough editing, this can also contribute to a decline in quality of the published works.
