BookTok–a Devil in Disguise? : A study of how TikTok has affected the contemporary publishing industry, authors, and readers. (English)
Abstract [en]

This study examines BookTok, a subcommunity on TikTok, and its impact on the publishing industry, authors, and readers. The purpose is to analyse the pros and cons, and whether the literary quality is affected. The study has been conducted through a quantitative observation of videos on BookTok, as well as a qualitative content analysis of previously conducted research. The results show a clear genre preference for romance, dark romance, and romantasy, often written by female authors. Book reviews on BookTok are often short and superficial, a contrast to traditional literary reviews. The conclusion is that BookTok has increased reading interest but it also presents an issue regarding how literary quality is viewed in the light of social media, there is a risk of publishers prioritizing more commercially viable books in cause of this.
