In Donna Tartt’s debut novel The Secret History (1992) a lot of focus is put on the aesthetically pleasing, but not so much on the character of it. We follow main characters who keep stumbling in to the area of the sublime but keep calling it by different words. The words picturesque, beauty, and terror seem to all at times be indistinguishable from the sublime. A combination of research on the sublime and the picturesque with a detour into the dionysian and a collection of elements of the novel which are related to the sublime; whether that be a dubious use of a word seeming to take the place of ‘the sublime’, how the main goals of the characters relate to the sublime or lists of plotpoints and situations connected to the concept of the sublime, are all combined, analysed and used to come to the conclusion of the sublime being an important part of the novel.

I Donna Tartts debutroman The Secret History (1992) ligger mycket fokus på det estetiskt tilltalande, men inte så mycket på dess natur. Vi följer huvudkaraktärer som återkommande snubblar in på området för det sublima men använder andra namn för det. Orden pittoresk, vacker och skräck verkar alla vid något tillfälle vara ekvivalenta med det sublima. En kombination av forskning om det sublima och det pittoreska, med ett sidospår till det dionysiska och en samling inslag från romanen som är kopplade till det sublima; om det då är genom en tveksam användning av ett ord som verkar ta ‘det sublima’s plats, hur karaktärernas huvudmål är relaterade till det sublima eller en lista handlingsuppslag eller situationer kopplade till det sublima som begrepp, kombineras, analyseras och används för att nå slutsatsen att det sublima är en viktig del av romanen.
