Denna uppsats analyserar Olivia Gatwoods spoken word-dikt Ode to my Bitch Face, genom att applicera Julia Kristevas teorier om den poetiska textens paragrammatiska struktur (huralla element i en text hör ihop) och genotext; den “del” av en text som innefattar semiotiska aspekter av språket, såsom rytm, rim, och fonetiska kluster. Den använder också Roland Barthes term “grain of voice” (“kroppen” i rösten) och geno-sång. Syftet är att tolka Ode to My Bitch Face, men också att undersöka hur meningen i en poetisk text kan fördjupas genomatt dela upp analysen efter två metoder: en närläsning och en närlyssning. Uppsatsen visar hur man genom att först läsa texten paragrammatiskt, kan öka förståelsen för textens bildspråk,och därmed för textens mening i sig. Denna tolkning fungerar sedan som en bas för när lyssningen, i vilken uppsatsen studerar och redogör för hur fysiska element i Gatwoodsröst, samt rytmen i dikten, fontiska kluster, ljud, och intonation, stärker och stöttar “orden på pappret” på ett flertal olika sätt, och adderar på så vis nya lager till den redan existerande tolkningen. Detta arbete visar och hävdar således att det är av stort värde för tolkandet av enpoetisk text, att behandla ljud och fonetik som semantik – särskilt inom spoken word.

This thesis analyzes Olivia Gatwood’s spoken word poem Ode to My Bitch Face, by applying Julia Kristeva’s theoretical work of the poetic text’s paragrammatic structure (how all elements within a text are connected) and genotext, which is the “part” of a text containing semiotic aspects of language, such as rhythm, rhyme, and phonetic cluster. It also uses Roland Barthes’ term “grain of voice” (the “body” within voice) and geno-song. The purposeis partly to interpret Ode to my Bitch Face, and partly to study how the meaning of a poem can be deepened, by splitting the analysis in two methodological approaches: one close reading and one close listening. The thesis discusses and concludes that by first performing aparagrammatic reading of the text, the understanding of the poem’s imagery enhances, and there by the understanding of the very meaning of the poem. This interpretation then works asa base for the close listening, in which the thesis studies and and accounts for how physical elements of Gatwood’s voice, and the rhythm of the poem, phonetic clusters, sounds, and intonation, strengthen and support the close reading in multiple ways; adding new layers to the already existing interpretation. This work thus shows and claims that treating sound and phonetics as semantics, is of great value for the interpretation of a poem, especially within the spoken word genre.
