In forefathers' cultural tracks : A study of how Vasaloppet present itself as cultural heritage. (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to research how the cross-country ski race Vasaloppet presents itself as cultural heritage and how it uses cultural heritage to offer and be something more than only a skiing competition. The method used is content analysis of Vasaloppet’s webpage and other official media to see what words and descriptions are being used to construct Vasaloppet as cultural heritage. Theories that have been used to analyze the material is critical heritage studies, legitimacy theory and Hobsbawms concept “the invention of tradition”. The result of the study shows that Vasaloppet often uses its history and traditions in a way that makes it clear that they want to be something more than a skiing competition, however it is not always very explicit. It is important to Vasaloppet to highlight its history and traditions since that gives added value to Vasaloppet and provides legitimacy.
