Abstract [sv]

Syftet med aktuell studie är att undersöka om och isåfall hur konkreta material i matematikundervisning påverkar elevers i årskurs 1 förståelse för likhetstecknets betydelse. I bakgrunden beskrivs centrala begrepp så som förtydligande av konkret material samt aktuell forskning inom området. Studien baserades på en undervisningsintervention i en klass med 17 elever och utvärderades med hjälp av för- och eftertest som analyserades med parat t-test. Resultatet visar att interventionen haft positiv effekt på gruppnivå, särskilt för elever med låga ingångsvärden. Vidare diskuteras resultatet ur ett kritiskt perspektiv i form av studiens begränsade urval, varför studien ses som en pilotstudie inför kommande studier. Slutsatser av studien är att konkreta material antas kunna underlätta inlärning av matematiska begrepp i lägre åldrar, men fortsatt forskning rekommenderas för att dra mer långtgående slutsatser på grund av studiens begränsningar i form av urval och antal deltagare.  

Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study is to investigate, whether and, if so, how the use of concrete materials in mathematics instruction influences first-grade students’ understanding of the equal sign. The background section outlines key concepts, including a clarification of what is meant by concrete materials, as well as a review of relevant research in the field. The study was based on an instructional intervention conducted in a class of 17 students and was evaluated using pre- and post-tests analysed through paired t-tests. The results indicate that the intervention had a positive effect at the group level, particularly for students with initially low performance. The findings are further discussed from a critical perspective, with particular attention to the study’s limited sample size, positioning the study as a pilot for future research. The conclusions suggest that concrete materials may facilitate the learning of mathematical concepts at an early age. However, due to limitations in sample size and number of participants, further research is recommended before more definitive conclusions can be drawn.
