Secret societies, dragons and a drunk police man. : The didactic potential in Terry Pratchett’s Guards! Guards! (English)
Abstract [en]
Didactic potential is a tool for analysis Malin Alkestrand uses in relation to her thesis Magical Possibilities: Teaching fundamental values with Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, and the Circle. In her work she highlights the positive sides of using young adult fantasy novels when working with youths. Alkestrand’s theory, together with research about humor in an educational environment, lays the foundation for this study, in which the purpose has been to investigate the usefulness of Terry Pratchetts Discworld in relation to teaching fundamental values. It does so by using Guards! Guards! as an example. By finding humorous situations and analysing them in relation to themes in the Swedish curriculum didactic potential has been uncovered. The results show that the humor and satire in the novel works well for facilitating discussions about fundamental values.
