”This is a time for both regret and gratitude” : - A study of power relations and resistance in Hunger games. (English)
Abstract [en]
The study aims to identify how Foucault's three techniques of power: sovereign power, disciplinary power and biopower are expressed in the dystopian youth novel The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) and to study how resistance and rebellion are portrayed in the book. The study is based on the following questions: "How are Foucault's three techniques of power represented in the dystopian youth novel The Hunger Games?" and "How is resistance andrebellion portrayed in The Hunger Games?"
The essay is based on Foucault's thinking about power, which departs from the traditional view that means that power can be located at a point in society that is superior to another. Instead, power is analyzed based on which technology of power is used rather than looking at who is beyond it, while Foucault believes that resistance to a power is a resistance to the technology of power that prevails and it is in this way that the phenomena of power and resistance are considered in the essay. To get a broader perspective on how resistance and rebellion are expressed, Malin Alkestrand's (2016) modification of Roberta Seelinger Trite'sphases in youth rebellion is used, which includes overregulation, acceptable rebellion, unacceptable suppression and finally Alkestrand's (2014) righteous rebellion.
The result shows that all three of Foucault's techniques of power appear in the novel and that these operate and grow through each other, where one presupposes the other. At the same time that resistance and rebellion are embodied through Katniss's actions towards the prevailing power techniques that exist, where the result also shows that the rebellion is possible through the power techniques. The study shows that all of Alkestrand's phases of youth rebellion are present in the book and become especially prominent after the little girl Katniss cared about, Rue, was murdered. Based on Alkestrand's (2021) book Mother and Murderers: Adults`Oppression of Children and Adolescents in Young Adult DystopianLiterature, the power relationship between teenagers and adults is also discussed and how this relationship takes place in the book, as well as showing how Katniss becomes a political symbol for the whole the rebellion and how Katniss is forced to kill to survive.
