Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to identify factors affecting the reading motivation positively and negatively among youths with a positive attitude towards reading. The study aims to answer the following questions: Which factors positively affects young people’s reading motivation? Which factors negatively affects young people’s reading motivation? Which intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors can be identified? The study shows that young people’s reading motivation is positively affected by escapism, excitement, friends, and other media. Young people’s reading motivation is negatively affected by lengthy books, assigned reading, and the lack of time. The study also shows that two participants have intrinsic motivation for reading while three participants have extrinsic motivation for reading. Autonomy is the factor that affects young people’s reading motivation the most.
