A nearly normal family, right? : An intersectional analysis of the character Stella in A nearly normal family. (English)
Abstract [en]

This study examines Mattias Edvardsson's novel An ordinary family (2018) from an intersectional perspective. The purpose is to highlight how power structures are shaped and affect the main character. In the analysis of the novel focusing on the main character Stella, intersectional theory is applied to analyze the intersection between gender, class and age. In the analysis, it appears that the main character's identity is heavily influenced by expectations and creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. Intersectional theory can also be used to make visible how power components work together and transform being to strengthen a person's identity, often to the negative. It is clear in the intersectional analysis of the novel that Stella's identity has been influenced based on this principle.

Suggestions for further research are related to the discussion of how sexuality, consent and relationships should be subject-integrated. With the analysis as a background, it is possible to carry out further analysis of the didactic potential of romance in the swing subject at upper secondary school and how sexuality, consent and relationships can be included in the teaching plan.
