This study centers around the American born author Ray Bradbury and his novel Something Wicked this way Comes, published in the year 1962 and in Sweden for the first time in 1964. Ray Bradbury is mostly known for hist dystopic science-fiction novel Fahrenheit 451. Something Wicked This Ways Comes is a story about a small town in America that gets a visit from a travelling carnival, during some days in the month of October. The main characters are Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway and the story centers around their experiences of the carnival.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the novel in a narratological way and then exam and identify in what way female and male characters are portrayed in the novel. More precisely is the aim of this study to identify how the female characters are constructed and what role they have in the novel, in other words is the goal to identify the functionality of the female characters in the novel’s story.

The study shows that the female characters have a more secondary role in the story compares to the male protagonists. The male characters are the ones who drive the story forward and the male characters are more conscious. But the female characters play an important role when it comes to represent ideas and to contribute with different themes in the novel. Bradbury explores themes like, motherhood, youth and aging, desires and also evil with the help of the presence of female characters.

Den här studien kretsar kring den amerikanska författaren Ray Bradbury och hans roman Oktoberfolket som publicerades år 1962 och i Sverige första gången 1964. Ray Bradbury är mest känd för sin dystopiska science fiction roman Fahrenheit 451. Romanen Oktoberfolket handlar om en liten amerikansk by som får besök under några dagar i oktober från ett resande tivoli. Huvudkaraktärerna är Jim Nightshade och Will Halloway och berättelsen kretsar kring deras erfarenheter kring tivolit.

Syftet med studien är att genomföra en narratologisk analys av Oktoberfolket för att sedan kunna undersöka och få syn på hur kvinnliga och manliga karaktärer porträtteras i romanen. I huvudsak ämnar studien undersöka hur kvinnliga karaktärer är konstruerade och mer specifikt vilken roll de spelar för romanen sett ur ett narratologiskt perspektiv. Vidare handlar det om att se vad de kvinnliga karaktärerna spelar för roll för berättelsen och berättelsens framåtskridande.

Vad studien visar är att de kvinnliga karaktärerna innehar en sekundär roll för romanens handling medan de manliga karaktärerna innehar de centrala rollerna för romanen. De manliga karaktärerna är de huvudsakliga orsakerna till berättelsens framåtskridande och de manliga karaktärerna är mer medvetna och uppmärksamma på vad som föregår i byn som är föremålet för boken. De kvinnliga karaktärerna i boken spelar dock en viktig roll för att bidra med idéer och teman till berättelsen. Bradbury utforskar genom de kvinnliga karaktärernas närvaro fenomen som moderskap, ungdom och åldrande, begär och även ondska.
