Syftet med denna studie är att synliggöra vad som sker med Caroline Kepnes thrillerroman YOU när den övergår till NETFLIX filmadaption i form av tv-seriens säsong ett utifrån frågeställningarna: Vad är det som skiljer bokens narrativ från filmatiseringens och som kan få betydelse för tittarnas uppfattning av huvudkaraktären? Hur kan skillnader i uppfattningen av huvudkaraktären mellan verken förklaras utifrån teorier om att sympatisera med antihjälten? Hur uttrycker sig adaptionen genremässigt i relation till det litterära verket? Studien genomförs genom en adaptionsanalys där likheter och skillnader mellan de båda verken som är av vikt att belysa för att besvara studiens frågeställningar eftersöks. Studiens teoretiska ramverk grundas i Keens et al. (2012), Wijkmarks (2014) och Lippmans (2015) teorier om att sympatisera med antihjälten.Resultatet av studien visar att adaptionens narrativ skiljer sig från romanens i fråga om struktur och flera händelser av betydelse, i berättare och fokalisation, karaktärsdrag och karaktärsfunktioner, samt visuella och auditiva funktioner. Ändringarna i adaptionens narrativ innebär en mer positiv syn på huvudkaraktären. Resultatet visar också att den mer positiva uppfattningen av huvudkaraktären i adaptionen kan förklaras utifrån teorier om att sympatisera med antihjälten. Slutligen visar resultatet även att adaptionen innehåller fler av de karaktärsdrag som kan härledas till den romantiska genren än romanen. På grund av att thrillergenren även kan innehålla framträdande inslag av romantik är det emellertid inte säkert att adaptionens genre förändras.

The purpose of this study is to examine what happens with Caroline Kepne's thriller novel YOU whenturned into NETFLIX film adaptation in the form of the TV series season one, based on the questions: What is it that distinguishes the book's narrative from the film adaptation and which can have an impact on the viewers' perception of the main character? How can the difference in the perception of the main character between the two works of art be explained based on theories of sympathizing with the anti-hero? How does the adaptation express itself in terms of genre in relation to the literary work? The study is carried out through an adaptation analysis. Similarities and differences between the two works of art are sought to answer the study's questions. The study's theoretical framework is based on Keens et. al. (2012), Wijkmark's (2014) and Lippman's (2015) theories of sympathizing with the anti-hero.The result of this study shows that the adaptation's narrative differs from the novel's in terms of structure and multiple events of significance, narrator and focalization, character traits and character functions, and visual and auditory functions. The changes in the adaptation's narrative means a more positive perception of the main character. The results also shows that the more positive perception of the main character in the adaptation can be explained based on theories about sympathizing with the anti-hero. Finally, the results also shows that the adaptation contains more character traits that can be derived from the romantic genre than the novel. Due to the fact that the thriller genre can also contain prominent elements of romance, it is not certain that the genre of the adaptation changes, however.
