Emojins roll i skriftlig kommunikation över generationer : A Study of Two Generations Use of Emojis (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how emojis are used in written communication between two differentage groups, 15–25 years and 55–65 years. The analysis is based on how emojis are used toexpress emotions, reinforce messages and to what extent they occur. In order for the thesis toachieve its purpose, a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods is applied. Thequalitative method involves a content analysis of how emojis expressed emotions and rein-forced messages, while the quantitative part focuses on counting and comparing theoccurrence of emojis between the two age groups. The study draws its data from statusupdates from a total of ten participants, five of whom are younger (15–25 years) and five areolder (55–65 years). These statuses are analyzed with up to three posts per person as a basis. This combination of methods allows both the occurrence of emojis and their function in textto be examined. The participants' updates were recruited through an open inquiry and theyagreed to their posts being used in the study. The results of the paper show that the oldergeneration participants used emojis more frequently to illustrate activities or reinforce thecontent of their posts. The younger generation uses emojis more sparingly and mainly toexpress emotions. The conclusion of the paper is that there are clear differences in emoji usebetween these generations in terms of purpose, style and frequency. Emojis thus appear as acommunication tool where use and function vary between the users’ age. Keywords: emojis, digital communication, age groups, language use
