To motivate change : Social service workers experiences of motivational work with clients who have an addiction problem (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The use of drugs and alcohol results in significant societal costs, with lost quality of life being one of the largest expenses. Since Social Services are expected to work in a motivating way to support individuals with substance use issues, it becomes relevant to explore how investigating social workers perceive and apply motivation in their work. The aim of this study was to explore how investigative social workers within the social services’ substance abuse care describe motivation and how they perceive their motivational work with clients. The research questions were: How do social workers describe motivation? What factors do social workers perceive as influencing the client’s motivation? And what methods or approaches do social workers use in their motivational work? To address these questions, a qualitative method was employed using semi-structured interviews. A total of six individuals working as social workers in two predetermined municipalities were interviewed. The collected data was interpreted and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The empirical data was then presented and analyzed with the support of ecological systems theory. One conclusion drawn from the study was that all the social workers described motivation as a desire for change. The interviewees had differing experiences regarding the extent to which they could influence a client’s motivation. Another conclusion was that the social workers believed they could work motivationally through training and knowledge. According to the social workers, giving clients time, being flexible in their work, and involving the clients contributed to motivating them to engage in outpatient interventions. The social workers also perceived that the interaction between the client and the investigative social worker, as well as shared goal-setting, were factors that influenced how motivation is maintained.
