Alliance - the foundation for change : A qualitative study on healthcare curators' experiences of the working alliance (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to investigate healthcare curator’s perception of the significance of the working alliance in curative work. The study also aimed to investigate how a working alliance is created and which factors promote or hinder the formation of an alliance. A qualitative method was used in form of six interviews with health care curator’s in primary care. The empirical data were analyzed using content analysis. Theories applied on the result were Mattsson’s tacit knowledge and Bordin’s working alliance theory. To promote the alliance, the curators highlighted the importance of a non-judgmental and value-neutral approach, being attentive and flexible and adapting to the patient's needs. Furthermore it was emphasized that the patient and the health care curator should agree on common goals and structure for the treatment. The most important factor was found to be good chemistry and compatibility between the health care curator and the patient. Factors that the curator perceives as potentially hindering for the alliance include collaboration with interpreters, time constraints, and lack of motivation on the part of the patient. It was noted that it's not always possible to establish a strong alliance with every patient and that, in some cases, it may be beneficial for the patient to switch curators. The study's conclusion emphasizes the alliance as a crucial component for treatment outcomes. The study has contributed to research in social work by highlighting the critical role of the alliance in therapeutic conversations and providing a deeper understanding of the factors influencing alliance-building.
