The essay has had the aim to study nationalism and religion in order to see how these two themes are expressed and interact with each other in four history textbooks from the 19050s. Since the study focuses on words, descriptions and structures, a discoursive method and theory has been used together with a comparative method and theories connected to nationalism. The results differ depending on whether it was a new edition of an old book or a new book. Sveriges historia i förhållande till det övriga Nordens: för realskola (1951) and Fäderneslandets Historia (1956) are new editions of older books. They are more focused on the Swedish agents that are described heroically, compared to their opponents that get a more villainous description. Världen och vi: allmän och svensk historia för 3- och 4-årig realskola (1958) and Historia för den treåriga realskolan (1958) are new books that do not show as many nationalistic and religious expressions. There is a reoccurring us, but the book does not use as many nationalistic terms related to relationship, such as fathers or other nationalistic relationship terms. In three of the books, religions are expressed through agents who are described to have had their faith be an importance of their everyday life. The two books that had the world in focus used religion as frame of reference. By mentioning God in connection with the nation’s history, religion becomes a tool to strengthen the nationalistic ideas that are presented to the readers through the books.
