Teacher and student perspectives on the revitalisation of Sephardic Spanish

Abstract [en]

Ladino, or Sephardic Spanish, is traditionally spoken by descendants of the Jewish community—Sephardim—who were expelled from Spain in 1492. The language has had important centres in Istanbul, Thessaloniki, and other cities in the Eastern Mediterranean region. However, it is now spoken by minority groups in different parts of the world.

The number of native speakers is believed to be between ten and fifty thousand, and the survival of the language is threatened. However, many revitalization efforts have been initiated in recent years, and the language has gained new speakers.In the project Teaching Ladino Online, ten Ladino teachers were interviewed about the challenges and need to strengthen revitalization efforts for the language (Fredholm, 2023). The teachers mentioned, among other things, the need for secure teaching positions, didactic skills development seminars, more opportunities to use the language outside of teaching situations, and updated teaching materials. In 2024, the project was followed up with interviews and a survey directed at students. The aim is to reflect on challenges and opportunities from both teacher and student perspectives, identify which revitalization efforts are sought by both groups and strengthen language instruction.The presentation provides examples from the teacher interviews, as well as from interviews and survey responses from Ladino students. The examples highlight common challenges in the efforts of teachers and students to revitalize the language, as well as some potential success factors.

Ladino eller sefardisk spanska talas traditionellt av ättlingar till den judiska folkgrupp – sefarder – som fördrevs från Spanien 1492. Språket har haft viktiga centra i Istanbul, Thessaloniki och andra städer i östra Medelhavsområdet, men talas nu av minoritetsgrupper även i andra delar av världen. Antalet modersmålstalare tros vara under ligga mellan tio och femtio tusen och språkets överlevnad är hotad. På senare år har dock många revitaliseringsinsatser inletts och språket har fått nya talare. I projektet Teaching Ladino Online intervjuades tio ladinolärare om utmaningar och behov för att stärka revitaliseringsinsatser i språket (Fredholm, 2023). Lärarna nämnde bland annat behov av säkra lärartjänster, didaktiska kompetensutvecklingsseminarier, fler tillfällen att använda språket utanför undervisningen och uppdaterade läromedel. Under 2024 följs projektet upp med intervjuer och en enkät riktade till elever. Syftet är att spegla utmaningar och möjligheter från både lärar- och elevhåll, för att ringa in vilka revitaliseringsinsatser som efterfrågas av båda kategorierna och på så sätt stärka undervisningen i språket. I presentationen ges exempel från lärarintervjuer och från intervjuer och enkätsvar från ladinostuderande. Exemplen visar på vanliga utmaningar i lärares och elevers försök att revitalisera språket, men också på några möjliga framgångsfaktorer.
