”A Bit Crazy Along With Serious Makes the Stories Stick" : A Interview Study on Useful Tools in Confirmation Teaching (English)
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to examine how priests in Svenska kyrkan, Karlstad stift teach about the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus in connection with confirmation educationand the challenges they may encounter. The study is based on seven priests in Karlstad Stift and which tools they use to teach the subject. The study is based on Illeris´learning model, is qualitative and the interviews were semi-structured. The results showed that the tools the priests primarily use was games, crafts, such as collages and drawings, Easter walks, films, and some form of drama. Either the students themselves performed the drama or the priests and leaders did. Several of the priests emphasized their desire to separate the teaching they had from the one the confirmands have in school. Therefore, they did not have long teaching sessions with theoretical instruction but had short sessions that they then alternated with some game, drama, or craft. The biggest challenge the priests mentioned was how to explain the mystery of how, for example, Jesus could rise from the dead. The priests also said that they tell what Christian faith and the Bible says and then the confirmands take in varying amounts of it. Another challenge the priests mentioned was how to capture the attention of the confirmands. To succeed in that, the priests tried to use different tools such as allowing the confirmands to use their whole body and different senses during the teaching.
