Abstract [en]
This study aims to research, through a semiotic image analysis, and reveal how classical works of art from a time when homosexual acts were prohibited by law, can leak queerness. This study focuses on Julius Kronbergs artwork David och Saul (1885) and Jaktfauner och nymfer (1875). The theories from which this study is based on include theories about sexuality and power, gaze theories, queer leakage, and Orientalism. When analyzing the motifs, a semiotic analysis inspired by Roland Barthes model was applied. The analysis of David och Saul (1885) shows that it challenges heteronormativity by portraying an intimate, queer-charged relationship between the men. Saul has a powerful and voyeuristic gaze directed at David, connoting queer leakage through intimacy, age difference, and erotic subtexts. The comparison with Jaktnymf och Fauner (1875) proves that both works explore power and sexuality through gazes and bodily positions.
