Psychological processes in relation to social anxiety in children, adolescents, and young adults : A systematic review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The current essay is a systematic review aiming to examine the psychological processes which have been studied in relation to social anxiety in children, adolescents, and young adults. A systematic search was conducted in PsycINFO, resulting in 355 articles, of which 53 were included. The processes were grouped based on similarities: social understanding, bias, attention, self-valuing processes, regulating processes, psychological flexibility, cognitive distortions, overt behaviour and risk-factors. The results for social understanding and overt behaviours were contradictory, where some articles indicated a relation to social anxiety while others did not. Bias in the form of negative expectations and interpretations, along with cognitive distortions and attention processes primarily in the form of negative assumptions and self-focused attention, were linked to social anxiety. Self-valuing processes were related to social anxiety in the form of negative problem orientation and self-efficacy, but not self-esteem. Among the regulating processes there were correlations between social anxiety and type of coping strategy. Articles examining psychological flexibility saw a negative correlation with social anxiety. Lastly, studies on risk-factors showed that individuals with social anxiety seem to have an increased sensitivity to stress which does not diminish after successful treatment. Overall, the result indicates that social understanding and social skills may not be as impaired in social anxiety as previously assumed, that negative thinking before and after social situations is related to the degree of social anxiety, and that process-based treatments may offer effective interventions for social anxiety as a complement to the established treatments available today.
