Abstract [en]

Introduction/Background: Access to dental care and maintenance of good oral health are crucial for individual well-being and overall health. However, challenges exist regarding unequal access to dental care. Factors such as socioeconomic status, past experiences, attitudes, and dental anxiety can all play a role in access to and utilization of dental services. Disparities in access to dental care can result in deteriorated oral health and increased risk of oral health-related diseases.

Aim: The study aimed to investigate attitudes and experiences regarding dental care and oral health among the Swedish population.

Method: A literature review was conducted with systematic searches and review of 13 scientific articles in databases such as Cinahl and Scopus.

Results: The results reveal varied experiences of oral health and dental care. The majority of the Swedish population values good oral health and considers regular dental care important. Economic barriers, fear of treatments, and lack of knowledge about oral health were identified as common challenges, particularly among the elderly and individuals with low socioeconomic status and/or foreign backgrounds. Positive interactions with dental personnel were found to increase the likelihood of seeking dental care, while negative experiences could lead to avoidance of dental care.

Conclusion: The study presented varied attitudes towards oral health and experiences of dental care in Sweden. Positive attitudes contributed to good oral health, while negative attitudes increased the risk of deteriorated oral health. Some factors influencing oral health included socioeconomic status, dental anxiety, age, background, and so forth. These factors highlight the need for targeted interventions to promote equitable access to dental care and increase knowledge about oral health.
