The COVID-19 pandemic affected most aspects of life: health, environment, education, and safety, with poverty and hunger on the rise across the world. South Africa has structural inequalities and struggles to achieve sustainable development goals [SDGs]. Community-based organizations [CBOs] play an essential role in supporting communities and preventing the health crisis of COVID-19 from evolving into a social crisis. Ocean View is a peri-urban, disadvantaged community located 1 hour outside Cape Town. The community faced struggles before the pandemic. Purpose The study will contribute to the field of public health by exploring community challenges in Ocean View in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspectives of community health workers. Procedures This exploratory holistic case study collected data from January to March 2023 in Ocean View through semi-structured interviews, informal conversations, and direct- and participant observation. Four CBOs with 8 participants for interview were selected through purposeful sampling. All data was transcribed and analyzed through qualitative content analysis with a feministic perspective. Results The analysis yielded three categories: “community hurts”, “disempowered community”, and “for the children’s sake.” The results show how the community was hurt during the pandemic, with increased food insecurity, violence, and poverty. These were challenges before and after the pandemic as well and demonstrate the existence of structural inequalities. The community experienced disempowerment but kept working towards a better future for the children’s sake. Conclusion From the case of Ocean View, we see many challenges related to determinants of health. There are challenges with general socio-economic, cultural/environmental conditions, and living/working conditions. Power structures and inequity lingering from the apartheid era and gendered differences are seen. Social policies to create living conditions that promote health and well-being for children and adults are needed for the hurts of the pandemic to be addressed and the SDGs to be reached.

 COVID-19-pandemin påverkade de flesta aspekter av livet: hälsa, miljö, utbildning, säkerhet, samt ökad fattigdom och hunger över hela världen. Sydafrika har strukturella ojämlikheter och kämpar för att uppnå de globala målen för hållbar utveckling. Samhällsbaserade organisationer [SBO] spelar en viktig roll i att stödja samhällen och förhindra att hälsokrisen med COVID-19 utvecklas till en social kris. Ocean View är en peri urbant, missgynnat område beläget en timme utanför Kapstaden. Området stod inför utmaningar redan innan pandemin. Syfte Studien kommer att bidra till folkhälsoområdet genom att undersöka utmaningar i Ocean View, i ljuset av COVID-19-pandemin från hälso- och socialarbetares perspektiv. Metod Denna utforskande holistiska fallstudie samlade data från januari till mars 2023 i Ocean View genom semistrukturerade intervjuer, informella konversationer, direkt- och deltagarobservation. Resultat Analysen resulterade i tre kategorier: "samhället skadar", "område fråntagen egenmakt" och "för barnens skull". Resultaten visar hur området skadades under pandemin, med livsmedelsosäkerhet, våld och fattigdom. Dessa utmaningar fanns även före och efter pandemin, liksom strukturella ojämlikheter. Området upplevde maktlöshet men fortsatte att arbeta mot en bättre framtid för barnens skull. Slutsats Från fallet Ocean View ser vi många utmaningar relaterade till hälsans bestämnings-faktorer. Det finns utmaningar med allmänna socioekonomiska, kulturella/miljömässiga förhållanden och levnads-/arbetsförhållanden. Maktförhållanden och ojämlikhet som härstammar från apartheidtiden och könsbaserade skillnader syns. Sociala policys för att skapa levnadsvillkor som främjar hälsa och välbefinnande för barn och vuxna behövs för att möta pandemins påfrestningar och uppnå globala mål.
