Perioperative nurses experiences of collaboration within the perioperative team : A phenonenografic study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Collaboration in the operating theatre is the cornerstone of perioperative care. Relationships within the perioperative team affect collaboration and patient care either positively or negatively. A lack of cooperation can be a contributing factor to health care injuries and the cooperation should therefore lead to good and safe care for the patient and to maintain patient safety.

Aim: To investigate the perioperative nurse's experiences of collaboration within the perioperative team.

Method: A qualitative interview study with a phenomenographic approach. The study group was perioperative nurses working in an operating department. The collected data (the interviews) were analyzed through a phenomenographic analysis.

Result: Three description categories was identified: To respect each other, which showed that sensitivity and respect for each other's professions were important. To have clear communication by using the WHO's checklist and closed-loop communication and to make the collaboration work where the opportunity to reflect together and work together outside the operating room is important for the collaboration within the perioperative team.

Conclusion:  Communication was the factor showed is the basis for collaboration and that in turn is mainly influenced by the personal attitudes of the team members. Tools developed to facilitate collaboration are also affected by the attitude towards using them. Interesting for further research would be to examine the perceptions of the other professions in the perioperative team related to collaboration.
