Abstract [en]

The essay focuses on four different textbooks' depictions of women and men during the Second World War. The purpose of the study is to analyze teaching materials from a gender perspective to see how women and men are portrayed, and how the portrayal has changed over time. The four textbooks that are analyzed were published in 1955, 1987, 1995 and 2016. The theoretical starting points of the essay are Joan W Scott, Yvonne Hirdman and Ervin Goffman's theories on gender and power relations. The survey consists of a qualitative method, where both texts and images are analyzed. Thereafter, a comparative analysis is also performed to account for changes over time. The results of the analysis showed a dominance of men in both texts and images. Men were most often portrayed in military and political contexts while women in everyday or vulnerable contexts. Men were mostly portrayed as superiors and were described as, among other things, leaders, violent and determined. Women who were portrayed as subordinates were most often described as caring or vulnerable. Changes that have been identified include that women go from being barely visible in pictures and barely in texts to actually being visible in text and images. In the newer textbooks, the history of the civilian population also has a greater place, which means that women are described to a greater extent than before. Further changes are that women in the textbook from 2016 appeared in positions of power, wich had not been done before. That book also describes the emotional side of male soldiers, which has not been done before either.
