"Who makes you unforgettable?" : Adjectives and gender in The Hunger Games. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Literature has the power to influence readers’ perception on different topics, including gender roles, and youths are particularly susceptible to this. Considering this it is then interesting to study how the female character Katniss and the male character Peeta are described in the popular young adult novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The present study focuses on adjectives relating to the person and how these relate to present gender stereotypes and whether they have a positive, negative or neutral connotation in its context. The collected adjectives are sorted into six semantic categories according to the theory of semantic fields. A qualitative analysis of the collected data determines how the adjectives relate to gender norms in society. The present study finds that Katniss, to a high extent, is described according to gender norms and when she goes against these a clear gender hierarchy is demonstrated where masculinity is higher regarded than femininity. Peeta is described according to gender norms to a lesser extent as he is described more equally with masculine as well as feminine features.

Keywords: Gender roles, young adult literature, The Hunger Games, semantic field theory, adjectives.
