Abstract [sv]

I den här uppsatsen undersöks hur ”familjen” som levde kring Charles Manson och mordende utförde använts i Emma Clines bok Flickorna och Quentin Tarantinos film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I analysen har de verkliga händelsernas eventuella påverkan på bokens och filmens appellstruktur undersökts. Morden som skedde på Cielo Drive är något som skildras i både boken och filmen och jämförs med fokus på dess betydelse för berättelsen.

Mansonfamiljen får ta olika stor plats i boken och filmen. I Flickorna används Mansonfamiljens ranch som en plats där huvuddelen av historien utspelar sig, i Once Upon aTime in Hollywood används gruppen som ett sätt att skapa en intrig. Hur stort utrymme som Mansonfamiljen får ta i narrativet påverkar hur tydlig bild läsaren eller åskådaren får av gruppen. Läsaren och åskådarens tidigare kunskap kring händelserna påverkar hur de luckor som lämnas fylls i.

Abstract [en]

This essey examines how ”the family” surrounding Charles Manson and the murders they committed on Cielo Drive is used in Emma Clines book The Girls and Quentin Tarantinos movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. In the analysis the real-life events possible influence on the book and movies structure of appeal has been examined. The murders on Cileo Driveis a part of both the book and the movie and the essey examine the impact the murders might have on the story.

The Manson family occupies various amount of space in the book and the movie. In TheGirls the Manson familys ranch is used as a place where the main part of the plot evolves. In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood the group is used as a way to create scheme. The amount of space the Manson family occupies in the narrative influences the clarity of the picture the reader or spectator gets of the group. The reader and spectator's prior knowledge surrounding the events influences how the gaps gets filled.
