Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka hur socialarbetare beskriver sitt arbete med och förutsättningarna för att tillgodose behovet av familjehem. Studiens empiri baseras på kvalitativa intervjuer gjorda med fem socialarbetare som arbetar med utredning och rekrytering av familjehem inom socialtjänsten. För att analysera empirin användes kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Analysen resulterade i två teman: tillgång och efterfrågan på familjehem, och organisatoriska hinder och förutsättningar. Resultatet analyserades ur ett systemteoretiskt perspektiv, och med koppling till olika former av kunskap och tidigare forskning. Studiens resultat visade att de hinder och förutsättningar som socialarbetarna upplevde i sitt arbete handlade om ökad komplexitet i ärenden, hög arbetsbelastning och avsaknad av enhetliga utredningsmetoder och statliga direktiv gällande arbetet med familjehemsvård. Slutsatserna var att familjehemsvården skulle gynnas av enhetliga utredningsmetoder för att öka effektiviteten i arbetet, och för att ges de bästa förutsättningarna för att kunna möta det behov som finns. 

The purpose of this study has been to investigate how social workers describe their work and conditions for meeting the need of family homes. The empirical data of the study is collected through qualitative interviews conducted with five social workers who work with the investigation and recruitment of family homes at the social service. To analyze the data qualitative content analysis was used. The analysis resulted in two themes: supply and demand for family homes and organizational barriers and prerequisites. The results were analyzed from a systems theoretical perspective, and viewed in light of various forms of knowledge and previous research. The results of the study show that the conditions for meeting the demands of family homes that social workers experience in their work are characterized by increased complexity in cases, high workload and the lack of uniform investigative methods and state directives regarding work on family home care. The conclusion is that family home care would benefit from homogenous investigative methods to increase work efficiency, and to provide the best conditions for meeting the needs that exist.
