Language attitudes to Swedish as a second language : A quantitative study on attitudes to ones own language use amongst adult second language speakers (English)
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes towards one's own language use in people who speak Swedish as a second language. The study is based on two research questions, one of which examines how attitudes to one's own language use in other languages and the other how attitudes relate to perceptions of competence. The study is based on a survey that 41 respondents answered and consists of 22 questions. The target group is adults who speak Swedish as their second language. The results of the study shows that attitudes towards one’s own language are predominantly positive and of affective function. Respondents attitudes were not consistent in relation to conceptions of competence. Those attitudes were primarily of functional function. Unlike other studies, the results showed that there were no significantly negative reactions to one's own language use.
