According to Ylva Brune, a Swedish researcher of the mass media, the word “immigrant” is today associated with alienation. The immigrants just are not like us. The purpose of this investigation is to show which subject fields that dominate the news report concerning immigrants and refugees during a certain period, in which roles the immigrants and refugees appear, and how the relationships between different agents are constituted. We also wish to investigate if the report differs, on the one hand between morning press and tabloid press, and on the other hand between the genders. We have chosen to focus on immigrant and refugee youths. In our theory chapter we present some factors that the mass media researcher Håkan Hvitfelt points out as important to consider in the news report. A selection of these is used in our method of investigation that consists of content analyses – quantitative as well as qualitative. We aim to examine the news material in the Swedish daily newspapers Dagens Nyheter (morning press) and Expressen (tabloid press) during a period of six months._x000B_Our findings show that our population primarily appears in subject fields such as crime, deportation/particular cases and influx of refugees/refugee politics/reception of refugees, and mostly in negative contexts. They also appear frequently as victims and play passive roles, while the Swedes are active and executive. The tabloid press differs from the morning press mainly by its use of dramaturgic tricks to a greater extent, and also by its choice of subject fields. The most astonishing difference between boys and girls in the articles is that the latter only occur as victims, while the boys are being portrayed somewhat more pluralistically.
