The novels Pamela and Pamela 2 by Samuel Richardson were meant to be a guide for female behaviour. The novels tell the story of a young and virtuous servant girl who thwarts her wealthy employer’s (Mr B.) attempts of seduction. The heroine’s virtuous manner enables her transit from one social group to another. This essay sets out to examine the different relationships in the novels, as they seem to portray various gender stereotypes. The essay deals mainly with the relationship between Pamela and Mr B. as their relationship, in my opinion, is a constant struggle for mastery. Pamela desperately wishes to maintain her own authority while Mr B. wants to control her. The essay also examines how a Patriarchal society forces both men and women into preconceived gender roles. Men are forced into dominance and women into submissiveness. Women also have to stay virtuous whereas men are allowed to follow their libertine desires. Even though Samuel Richardson’s aim may not have been to enforce the Patriarchal society’s gender roles, he does so by forcing his characters into these stereotypes
