Abstract [en]
My study is a qualitative study were I have observed and interviewed four teachers that are working in grades 4–6. It shows how they are using digital tools to increase or maintain the learning motivation of students when they are working on mathematical tasks. My study also reports on the obstacles teachers can see when they use for example a computer in their teaching, which then affects the motivation to study negative.
In summary, my study shows that teachers are using digital tools in different ways. One way is that they are using digital tools as a carrot to encourage students to persevere. Another way is that they are using it as a pedagogical way to explain mathematical concept or terms to students (example a movie on YouTube).
All teachers that I interviewed for my study sees many great advantages when using digital tools in class. One important thing they all say is the possibility of making the mathematics task personalized so that all students can work with tasks that are on their own level. But all teachers also see some difficulties using digital tools, the main barrier is that the students are doing things on the laptop or on the tablet that they are not suppose to do, for example visiting webpages that has no connection to mathematics.
