The Geography of Choirs in Sweden : A study of the choirs in the Church of Sweden and the Swedish Choir Association (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Choral singing has a long history in Sweden. Today, choral singing is regularly practised in both sacred and secular organisational forms, involving an estimated six percent (600.000 individuals) of Sweden's population. These choral organisations are widespread and currently cover the entire geographical area of Sweden. Choral organisations can thus not be seen as marginal either in relation to population or area. Paradoxically, despite the number of participants and their distribution, research on choir activities has only been scarcely studied in Sweden. The aim of this thesis is to make a contribution to Human Geography by illuminating and creating an understanding of the relationship between choral organisations and geography. Place, Urban – Rural and Sacred – Secular are central elements in this thesis. The empirical basis consists of primary data collected through questionnaires and secondary data in the form of official statistics. In this sense, the thesis makes a contribution to human geography research on choral organisations in Sweden and, more broadly, other contexts. The thesis concludes that choral organisations have a strong relationship to place in Sweden. The thesis presents a mapping of choir organisations in Sweden. The thesis then problematises the common binary perceptions of Rural – Sacred and Urban – Secular. The results indicate that these binaries should be nuanced in relation to choral organisations. The thesis also concludes that choral organisations in Sweden should be interpreted from a post-secular perspective.

Abstract [en]

The geography of choirs has seldom received attention in human geography and even less so in a Swedish context. This article analyses the geography of choirs in Sweden by focusing on choir members in the Church of Sweden. Sweden offers an interesting case of choral geography because of (1) the Church of Sweden's geographical presence, (2) the number of choir members, and (3) the role of religion in contemporary Swedish society. An intimation of the contemporary significance is that the Church of Sweden has 78,170 choir members in 2020 and is active in every municipality. The data consist of the Church of Sweden membership and choir members visualized in turn on maps. The qualitative analyses of the quantitative data reveal that there seem to be few youth-choir members in Sweden. There seem to be many children choir members in the larger cities but fewer in rural areas. The northern part of Sweden seems to have generally lower levels of choir members but higher membership in the Church of Sweden. Another finding is that high membership in the church does not necessarily mean a high number of choir memberships. For further studies, quantitative engagement with more datasets together with an engagement with post-secular theories is suggested.

Abstract [en]

The role of religion in Western societies has gained renewed attention in recent years. While choirs have been studied to varying extents in the social sciences, the geography of choirs has received little attention, particularly in human geography. Using questionnaire responses from secular choir members, this exploratory study examines the possible differences and/or similarities of secular choir’s sacral and/or secular activity in urban and rural spaces in Sweden. The study reveals two primary findings. First, it reveals that secular choir members engage in a mixture of secular and sacred activities, suggesting that these activities can be considered postsecular. Second, the data challenges the geographical perception of rural environments as more sacred/traditional, as they have a high proportion of secular activities. Likewise, the results questions the geographical perception of urban environments as secular/modern, as they demonstrate an even distribution of sacred activities.
