Because of global warming and the climate change, the United Nations developed the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 at the parties third conference in Kyoto Japan. The Kyoto Protocol was binding and the countries that ratified it would strive to achieve the commitments that have been assigned to them. Many countries chose not to ratify the Protocol, including the United States. Sweden were one of the countries that chose to ratify the Protocol, therefore the thesis aims to describe how Sweden has argued about the Kyoto Protocol at national and international level and how those arguments are in relation to the United States that have chosen not to ratify the protocol. This essay that is based on text analysis and research design is comparing most different design. With the help of the theory of soft and hard power, the results showed that Sweden and the United States had almost the same arguments when it comes to certain points about the Kyoto protocol.
