Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND It is widely known in the sphere of research that Sweden has problem with xenophobia. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) mean that the present situation is not durable, Sweden has to look into its legislation. ECRI state in their ”Second report on Sweden” inter alia that immigrants are discriminated both in housing and labour markets. They also mean immigrant students are not shown enough attention in the school. PURPOSE The purpose of this essay is to found understanding in what way the Swedish upper secondary school is conducive to xenophobia that can be seen in society. I basically study the possibilities whether immigrant students are regarded as a threat or an opportunity in the Swedish upper secondary school. REALISATION The comprehensive questions in this issue are as follows: How do students from different ethnic backgrounds get on with each other at school? What scope do immigrant students get in the classroom? To what extent are immigrant students’ background utilised in teaching situations? The questions are answered in a case study. I have made an observation study at an upper secondary school and analysed gained experience from earlier research results and existing law. CONCLUSION S Immigrant background is considered as well a threat as an opportunity in Swedish upper secondary school. The threats run the risk of founding expression to injustice and maintain hostility towards xenophobia in society. The opportunities increase immigrant students’ possibilities to succeed in the Swedish upper secondary school and in society in the future. The identity crisis that the school has at present is necessary to bring up citizens to a multicultural society.
