Using Critical Discourse Analysis, this study describes and analyses the selection and content and also the use of language in the articles of the tabloid Expressen concerning the unveiling of the former sport star Ludmila Engquist’s use of doping. We also want to find out why the reporting was presented in this way. Critical Discourse Analysis is both a method and a theory, which has focus on the ability of language to direct our interpretations, and aims to find underlying ideologies that explains the presentation of a text. It contains three levels of analysis: (1) the text itself; (2) the production of the text; and (3) the relationship between the text and the structures of society and culture. Our conclusions are that Expressen’s presentation of Ludmila’s doping is sensation focused and that the language used is dramatic. Most of the articles published were negatively or critically biased against Ludmila’s doping. They were mainly based on interviews and contain little journalistic language. The selection of sources is therefore an important task for the journalist and a way for her or him to bias the articles without having to express her or his opinion. The incident was presented as an intertextual serial story where the articles sequenced each other. Many of the articles were merely new angles or further development of the original information. We believe that the articles are constructed as they are, partly as a consequence of the factors of production being focused on the logic of news values, the economy of the company, and the working conditions of the journalists – in their turn being affected by stress and workload. The dramatic and sensation focused language and bias of the articles are partly due to the fact that Expressen is an evening paper dependent on the selling of single copies. Other factors affecting the construction of the texts are larger social structures and ideologies. In our analyses of the articles, we have mainly perceived two such dominating ideologies: “the entertainment ideology” and “the sports nationalism”. We state that Expressen reproduces existing structures and ideologies in society by its way of using language and making selection of material.
