Nature, mind and identity in Charlotte Brontes Jane Eyre
2004 (Engelska)Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen)Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
Abstract [en]

To a great extent, Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre is influenced by Romanticism’s worshipping of nature. Therefore nature is frequently described throughout the novel and it is obvious that Jane Eyre has a very intense relationship to nature and the outdoors. My purpose with this essay is to show how nature can be related to the development of the mind and identity of Jane Eyre, and to explain some of the nature symbols that are illustrating her life. By doing a thorough investigation of nature imagery, weather and rotation of the seasons, one is able to see a clear connection between them and Jane Eyre’s frame of mind. Thus, the essay emphasizes that the use of symbols and the many references to nature give the novel a deeper meaning.
