Christ in CS Lewis Chronicles of Narnia
2002 (Engelska)Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen)Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
Abstract [en]

By making parallels with the Bible this essay establishes three specific aspects of the portrayal of Christ found in the Chronicles of Narnia. The first aspect, found in The Magician’s Nephew, presents Aslan as a figure of Christ in being creator. On the whole this story resembles that of the creation found in Genesis although there are some details that differ. . The essay further reveals Aslan as a type of Christ, in being redeemer. The portrayal of Christ as redeemer is most explicit in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe where Aslan chooses to take the punishment of death instead of a traitor, an event identical to the sacrificial death of Christ. The theological and juridical aspect of Christ’s redemptive sacrifice is also scrutinised in the essay. The third aspect of Christ in the Chronicles of Narnia, that the essay analyses is that of the eschatological Christ. It is stated that biblical prophesies about the second coming of Christ are allegorically fulfilled in The Last Battle. Finally, the significance of placing the portal figure of Christianity in a fantasyland and why Lewis has chosen to do this is looked at. The author’s intention of the factual portrayal of Christ as well as other Christian elements in The Chronicles of Narnia, has been widely discussed. It is argued that Lewis might have had evangelistic purposes in placing Christ in Narnia.
